Public nominations are welcome. Before nominating an individual review the criteria for recognition. If you think the nominee meets the criteria, contact the Points of Light Institute by mail, fax or e-mail.

At a minimum, include the nominee's name and a brief description of his/her achievement. Samples of the biographical summaries that have been prepared for nominees are available by viewing a nominee at right. Please bear in mind that, while it is helpful, your submission does not need to be as detailed as these summaries.

In order to be selected for recognition by The Extra Mile, nominees must meet the following criteria, which are mandated by legislative fiat:

The person's achievement must have:

• been made in the public interest
• materially improved American society or the environment
• had a positive effect on a significant number of people in the U.S.
• been made while the person was acting as a private citizen, not as an appointed or elected government official
• been undertaken outside of the person's normal work assignment & not for profit
• taken place at least five (5) years ago.

The person must have been born in the U.S. or naturalized as a U.S. citizen.

The selection committee shall not consider the race, color, religion, national origin, sex or political affiliation of any nominee in making its decision on whether to honor an individual's accomplishments.

All nominations must be reviewed by a nine member selection committee and a two-thirds majority is required for selection.
